An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Because my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but straight off told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she declared: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a position in Switzerland where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
